Understanding Spider Veins

Spider veins are a very common syndrome where small blood vessels are visible in the skin. Typically seen on the legs, spider veins can be an indication of a medical problem or simply a cosmetic issue.
They can occasionally be painful or cause itching, burning or heaviness in the legs. Before treating spider veins, it's important to ensure the problem isn't being caused by venous reflux. This can only be determined with an ultrasound.
If there is a venous reflux problem, spider veins will typically reappear after they're treated.
If venous reflux is identified, the spider vein will typically disappear once the underlying problem is eliminated.
In general, spider veins are not a serious medical condition, although they may bleed profusely after an injury.
